The Edo State Ministry of Mining and Energy is responsible for the development and regulation of the mining and energy sectors in Edo State, Nigeria. The ministry was established in 2019 and is headed by the Commissioner for Mining and Energy.

Our Vision

To harness all available solid mineral and petroleum resources for the overall development of the State with particular reference to mineral producing communities thereby making Edo State a core Oil and Mineral producing State.

Our Mission

To facilitate the implementation of Government policies in revenue generation from solid minerals including oil and gas, and for infrastructural development and job creation from the exploitation of solid mineral, oil and gas for the people of the State.

Our Mandate

The Ministry of Mining and Energy in Edo State oversees the solid minerals and petroleum sectors, developing and regulating the mining industry. It implements government policies to generate revenue from solid minerals, including oil and gas and facilitates infrastructural development and job creation from their exploitation. The ministry's mandate includes harnessing all available solid mineral and petroleum resources to make Edo State a core oil and mineral-producing state, particularly benefiting mineral-producing communities.

Organizational Structure

The Ministry of Mining and Energy is headed by the Commissioner for Mining, Oil, and Gas, who oversees various departments and units within the ministry. These include the Department of Solid Minerals, the Department of Petroleum Resources, and the Department of Mining Regulation and Compliance, among others.

In 2021, Edo State produced a total of 3.7 million tons of solid mineral products and 30,000 barrels of oil. The state is ranked fourth in solid minerals output and 10th in oil production in Nigeria.

MINERAL RESOURCES FOUND IN EDO STATE

1. CLAY

Clay minerals form in the presence of water and are important constituents of soils, and have been useful to man in agriculture and manufacturing.

2. FELDSPAR

Feldspar is a common raw material used in glassmaking, ceramics, and to some extent as a filler and extender in paint, plastics, and rubber.

3. GOLD

A relatively rare mineral, gold is a precious metal that has been used for coinage, jewelry, and other arts throughout recorded history.

4. GRANITE

Granite is a coarse-grained (phaneritic) intrusive igneous rock, mostly used for construction purposes.

5. IRON ORE

Iron ores are rocks and minerals from which metallic iron can be economically extracted.

6. LIMESTONE

Limestone is used in steel manufacturing, mining, paper production, water treatment and purification, and plastic production.

7. LATERITE

Laterite soil is frequently used as road pavement material. They make excellent embankment building materials.

8. BITUMEN

Bitumen is primarily used for industrial purposes. It is used to make roads and roofing sheets.

9. PHOSPHATE

Phosphate when turned into phosphoric acid, is used in everything from food and cosmetics to animal feed and electronics.

10. GYPSUM

Used in the manufacture of chalk and wallboard, it is also used in agriculture in the production of fertilizer and in soil conditioning.

11. OIL & GAS

Edo State is also home to a number of oil and gas fields.

12. DOLOMITE

Dolomite is an ingredient used in the production of glass, bricks, and ceramics. Dolomite serves as the host rock for many lead, zinc, and copper deposits.
